The Artists First Alliance, consisting of Baxter St at CCNY, NXTHVN, founded by Titus Kaphar and Jason Price, and The Last Resort Artist Retreat, founded by Derrick Adams, is thrilled to announce a collaborative benefête taking place on September 9, 2022, at the Rockaway Hotel. United by their shared missions and driven by a collective effort to make artistic residencies more equitable, the three organizations have joined together to create a collaborative fundraising event that will celebrate their creative communities while directly funding each organizations’ residency program. Chaired by Sarah Arison, Mickalene Thomas, and Suzanne McFayden, the evening will bring together artists, philanthropists, and cultural luminaries for a memorable night of musical performances with a higher purpose. Spearheaded by Baxter St and in partnership with NXTHVN and The Last Resort Artist Retreat, the event’s proceeds will be equally distributed and help fund the mission-aligned programs of the New York City, New Haven, and Baltimore-based organizations and support artists from historically marginalized backgrounds.

Building on the success of Baxter St’s annual fundraising event last year, the Artists First Alliance benefête will also take place at the Rockaway Hotel, across 16,000 square feet of outdoor space. The evening will feature a DJ Set by Lion Babe and performances from Los Hacheros, The Acapulco Express, Chuck D and Black Thought.

All three organizations in the Artists First Alliance aim to enhance creative communities by directly supporting artists while fostering and strengthening connections between them. The pandemic enhanced the importance of a strong and healthy creative ecosystem, and the leadership of each organization recognized the mutual benefit of joining forces to fundraise for their artist-centered programming, with artistic residencies as the focus.

Celebrating the diverse creative community of the Artists First Alliance, all proceeds from the event will go directly towards artistic residencies, which are integral to each organization. All three are committed to making artistic residencies more equitable, and aim to support artists at all stages of their careers, from the emerging artist with their first solo exhibition to the established artist in need of a space for respite and reflection. Founded in 1884, Baxter St is one of New York’s oldest artist-run nonprofit spaces fostering the development of emerging lens-based artists at critical moments of their careers. Central to this mission is the Baxter St Residency Program, which provides artists with much-needed workspace as well as access to the Baxter St community and facilities along with a stipend and the opportunity to produce a solo exhibition. Titus Kaphar’s NXTHVN empowers artists and curators through a unique year-long Fellowship program that supports both administrative and theoretical aspects of creative professions with individual mentorship. Recognizing the importance of leisure and rest, Derrick Adams’ The Last Resort Artist Retreat provides Black creatives with a four-week stay of self-reflection and fellowship.

The Artist First Host Committee is Jane Cohan, Glori Cohen, Kimberly Drew, Tiana Webb Evans, Casey Fremont, John and Christine Gachot, Hannah Gottlieb-Graham, Jane Hait, Adam Cohen and Michelle Hellman, Stephanie Horton, Reena Jana, Vivien Lewit, Joseph Mizzi, Skylar Pittman, Hannah Traore, and Michelle Trotter.
