On Broken Ground

Hannah Smith Allen

In the wake of the 2016 presidential election, Allen began visiting Google Earth to examine the wall separating California from Mexico.
She noticed anomalies—glitches in the mapping software–which opened and broke apart the border.

The glitches inspired Allen to make three physical trips to the U.S.–Mexico border to photograph the landscape firsthand.

Allen’s work is an exploration of how the American landscape and its people are shaped by history.

A series of new screen prints splinters the border landscape with images from President Trump’s 250th Anniversary military parade.

The video installation Dream States, U.S./MX, is a slow-motion stop motion video, which traces multiple border crossings captured in Google Earth.

The work is shown alongside Borderlands, a nearly 200-inch-wide accordion book, published by Visual Studies Workshop Press.
