Every year Baxter St at the Camera Club of New York holds an open call for entries for its Annual National Photography Competition. This year the competition will be juried by curator and art historian Andrianna Campbell.
The deadline for 2017 has passed.
Photographers and photo-based artists working in any genre are eligible to apply. Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a cohesive body of work. Three selected applicants will be featured in an exhibition at BAXTER ST at CCNY and on our website. Fifteen Honorable Mentions will also be featured on our website.
ABOUT THE 2017 JUROR:
Andrianna Campbell is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Art History at the CUNY Graduate Center, where she specializes in American art in the modern and contemporary period. Her doctoral research focuses on Norman Lewis and Abstract Expressionism in the post-World War II period. Alongside her scholarly research, she is the author of essays and reviews on contemporary art for Artforum, Art in America, and Frieze. Campbell was currently the coeditor of Shift: A Graduate Journal of Visual and Material Culture from 2014-2016 and a 2016 special edition of the International Review of African American Art dedicated to Norman Lewis. She is the recipient of numerous fellowships and awards including the Dean K. Harrison Fellowship, the Preservation of American Modernists Award, the Library Fellowship from the American Philosophical Society, the Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship at the Dia Art Foundation, the Dissertation Writing Fellowship at the The Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture for New York Public Library and and the CASVA Chester Dale Fellowship from 2016-2017. Campbell recently curated the exhibition Vanishing Points at James Cohan Gallery and is co-editor of the forthcoming journal Apricota. She serves on Baxter St at CCNY’s Art Advisory Board.
The competition is open to all U.S. residents 18 years or older. Baxter St at CCNY staff, Board members, workspace fellows, artists-in-residence, and their families are not eligible. Only photographs or photo-based work will be considered.
PRIZES & BENEFITS:
Three selected applicants will be featured in an exhibition at Baxter St at CCNY opening mid-August 2017. There is no production budget for the exhibition and work must be ready to hang by August 15, 2017. Winners and 15 Honorable Mentions will also be featured on the Baxter St at CCNY website. Sales will be encouraged. (A 30% commission applies to all sales, the artist keeps 70%.)
HOW TO APPLY:
Each artist is able to submit entries online through Submittable, where a complete list of rules can be found.

1) Work Samples
Each applicant may submit up to 10 images for consideration.
2) Artist statement and/or Resume (optional)
Applicants may provide an Artist Statement (200 words or less) and/or a one-page resume in PDF form. Artist statements should address the work submitted.

BAXTER ST at CCNY is pleased to announce the finalists for the 2016 Annual Juried Photography Competition and an upcoming exhibition featuring the top three competition artists, juried by artist Mickalene Thomas. The three top winners – First Place Winner Travis Brown, Second Place Winner Danielle Eliska Lyle, and Third Place Winner Marc Ohrem-Laclef offer three different but cohesive visions of contemporary photographic practice.
