Each year, Baxter St at CCNY invites emerging lens-based artists living in New York City to apply for the Baxter St at CCNY Workspace Residency Program. This residency offers lens-based artists much-needed workspace in New York City as well as access to the Baxter St at CCNY community and programs. Entering its 13th year, the Baxter St at CCNY Workspace Residency Program provides participating artists with three (3) months of free access to B&W Darkrooms and Digital Workstations. The Baxter St at CCNY Workspace Residency Program is made possible by generous support from the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature; The Jerome Foundation; public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, in partnership with the City Council; and Fujifilm.
BENEFITS OF THE WORKSPACE RESIDENCY:
Workspace: Residents receive three months of free access to the Digital Labs and B&W Darkroom facilities at the International Center of Photography, as well as the in-house digital workstations at Baxter St for the entire year.
Stipend: Residents receive a stipend of $1,000 per month during their three months of workspace access as well as donated material support.
Exhibition Opportunity: Dependent on funding, each resident may receive a solo exhibition at Baxter St at CCNY after the term of their residency. If the resident is granted a solo show they will receive a production fee appropriate to our W.A.G.E. certification level (this fee historically has been three times the W.A.G.E. certification level). Residents will also receive a one-on-one meeting with an Art Advisory Board Member, a critical essay written about their work, and a video interview.
All artists currently residing in New York City who are working in photography or lens-based art are eligible to apply. Please note that living accommodations are not provided. Students must have completed their studies on or before January 1, 2020 in order to be eligible to apply. Chosen Workspace Residents MUST be New York City residents for the duration of the residency period. There is no fee to apply.
Work Sample: Provide a work sample of 10 images (required, this can include installation shots) and up to 1 video (optional, maximum 3 minutes).
Letter of Intent: Provide a short paragraph (maximum 300 words) addressing what you aim to accomplish during a Baxter St at CCNY Workspace Residency, and how that time at Baxter St would most benefit your artistic work and career goals.
Artist Statement: Provide a brief, one-paragraph artist statement (maximum 300 words).
CV: Provide a one-page artist’s resume.
References: Provide the names and contact information for two references. These will not be seen by the jury.
A jury of art professionals will consider all eligible applications.
