Anthony Urrea
2017 Annual Juried Competition
Honorable Mention

Bio:
Anthony Urrea, is a Colombian American photographer who will receive his BFA from SVA in May of 2017. Urrea seeks to produce a body of work with honest intentions. Indeed his portraits are extensions of his own interiority. The work actively questions themes of identity and legitimacy. With a tender eye, Urrea carefully captures moments that organically unravel in his life and relationships. Such moments invite the viewer to reconsider how different bodies are seen and consciously hailed into place. The inclination to explore the visual and psychic complexity of non-normative identities, stems from his experience as a young, queer, Latino.

Urrea’s work has recently been featured  in Matte Magazine and at the Fondo Malerba exhibition at the International Photo Project 2017 in Milan. Furthermore, he was paired with artist Laurel Nakadate for SVA photo department’s Mentor Show.
