Baxter St at the Camera Club of New York is pleased to announce Elise R. Peterson’s solo exhibition, In Due Time, on view May 9 – June 16, 2019 in our project space at 128 Baxter St.
The transparency of a person is under constant evaluation. We judge based on visibility without much deeper consideration for the opacity of a person’s experience. Even, at times, our own vision of self can be obscured. Trauma, love, rebirth, loss and a myriad of other experiences deepen the tonality between who we have been and who we are.
This obsession with examining iterations of self has fueled an ongoing collage animation series utilizing 35mm images, audio selections along with archival and home video. In Due Time explores the artist’s evolving intimate relationships with others and herself centered around the framework of birth and motherhood.
Elise R. Peterson is a storyteller analyzing the nuance of how identity interacts with varying sociopolitical factors as it relates to marginalized communities. Her visual work is centered on reinterpreting the past and envisioning the future within the framework of Blackness, evolution and cross-generational narratives.
