PAST ZINE AND PHOTO BOOK FAIR

Baxter St Block Party

We are thrilled to announce that we’re hosting our first ever Baxter St Block Party on Saturday, May 11, 2024 from 12 pm – 5 pm on Baxter St between Canal and Hester. The Baxter St Block Party will be a festive gathering aimed at bringing together our community for an afternoon of celebration. This event aims to create community engagement by fostering a stronger connection with our local community, especially with our neighbors in Chinatown and the Lower East SIde.

The Block Party will also coincide with the opening of the new exhibition Correspondence: circulation, collaboration, and community in Baxter St’s Project Space Gallery.

Stay tuned for more information about the days activities and schedule!

If you are interested in participating in the event as a volunteer please visit this form.

ALL DAY EVENTS

Cinefoil Collage Workshop with Julia Norton

In this drop-in workshop for all ages, participants will work with black cinefoil (a material used in photography to control light) as well as other materials to create one-of-a-kind collages. This workshop will help foster inspiration from the tactile nature of the materials and the unique textures they bring to an art work.

Family Archive Reflection & Zine Making Workshop with Chinatown Photo Album

Chinatown Photo Album is a community-sourced archive of family photographs and stories connected to Manhattan’s Chinatown. We highlight the faces, places and memories that shape the neighborhood through a digital archive and print zine. By telling Chinatown’s history through the eyes of its people, we aim to celebrate the neighborhood’s cultural heritage in the face of gentrification. Chinatown Photo Album uses digital media and print zines to share community photos and stories. We also host photo digitization, oral history and collage making workshops with community organizations.

Through DIY-ing a zine, participants are invited to reflect on how they construct their own family archives. Participants will learn how to transform a piece of paper into an 8-page zine with simple folds and cuts.

Reassembling the Past & Crafting Futures through Art (PES Futures)

Reassembling the Past & Crafting Futures through Art is a workshop inspired by Derrick Adams’ exhibition Future People… Take Off. Participants will create cosmic collages using colored paper, magazine cutouts, foil, and star stickers to envision their outer space adventures. Guided by the Afrofuturistic themes of the exhibition, participants will cut and glue materials onto large poster boards, encouraged to imagine and depict scenes of intergalactic exploration and futuristic cities. This workshop offers an opportunity to use art to imagine and discuss ways we learn from the past, hold each other accountable, honor our ancestors/histories, and push forward towards liberation for all.
