Juried Competitions

The Juried Competition will not be held in 2020.

Baxter St at the Camera Club of New York holds an open call for entries for its National Photography Competition.

Photographers and lens-based artists working in any genre are eligible to apply. Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a cohesive body of work. Three selected applicants will be featured in an exhibition at Baxter St at CCNY and on our website. Fifteen Honorable Mentions will also be featured on our website.

PREVIOUS 2018 JUROR:

Matthew Leifheit is a Brooklyn-based photographer. He is Editor-in-Chief of MATTE Magazine, an independent journal of emerging photography founded in 2010 that recently released its 47th issue. He was formerly the photo editor of VICE, and has also written criticism and interviews for Aperture, Foam, Art F City and TIME LightBox. Leifheit holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA from the Yale School of Art, where he was awarded the Richard Benson Prize in 2017. Currently, Leifheit is an adjunct professor in photography at Yale, Parsons, Pratt and School of Visual Arts.

Leifheit’s work in photography and publishing has been exhibited internationally and is held in public collections including the International Center of Photography, the Museum of Modern Art Library, and Yale’s Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library. His photographs have appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker, TIME Magazine, VICE and the Yale Daily News.

ENTRY:
The competition is open to all U.S. residents 18 years or older. Baxter St at CCNY staff, Board members, workspace fellows, artists-in-residence, and their families are not eligible. Only photographs or photo-based work will be considered.

PRIZES & BENEFITS:
Three selected applicants will be featured in an exhibition at Baxter St at CCNY. There is no production budget for the exhibition, however Annual Juried winners will be supplied with Awagami paper for printing their works included in the exhibition. Winners and 15 Honorable Mentions will also be featured on the Baxter St at CCNY website. Sales will be encouraged. (A 30% commission applies to all sales, the artist keeps 70%.)

HOW TO APPLY:
Each artist is able to submit entries online through Submittable, where a complete list of rules can be found.
Please submit only the following materials via Submittable:

1) Work Samples
Each applicant may submit up to 10 images for consideration.

2) Artist statement and/or Resume (optional)
Applicants may provide an Artist Statement (200 words or less) and/or a one-page resume in PDF form. Artist statements should address the work submitted.
