Baxter St’s Critique Groups continue to be a centerpiece of our educational programming. Our Critique Groups focus on the evaluation of emerging lens-based artists’ work in a small-group setting. These groups serve the needs and aspirations of Baxter St members who represent a diversity of experience and identity, helping them strengthen their practice and advance their careers.
The critique groups reflect Baxter St’s founding principle to support emerging underrepresented artists and to foster dialogues between peers and professionals around the medium of photography. The Groups’ leaders are central to the program’s success and share readily of their knowledge and expertise. Members gain access to celebrated artists who are masters of their craft, as well as key experts who speak with authority on trends and traditions and who drive the world of museums, galleries, auctions, collectors, and curators.
Member Critique Group:
Our member critique groups are offered once per month, bringing together our members in a small-group setting focused on the evaluation of work by peers and working professionals in the arts industry. Please see our membership page for more information on how to become a member.
Art Advisory Critique Group:
Our Art Advisory Critique Groups offer monthly critiques to up to 4 members led by one of our esteemed members of our Art Advisory Committee. Please see our membership page for more information on how to become a member.
Queer Critique Group:
In honor of Pride Month, Baxter St at CCNY launched a new virtual Queer Critique Group run by artist Michael McFadden. This group allows artists the opportunity to obtain critical feedback on lens-based work, provide input and support to other queer photographers, learn, grow and share resources with peers, and to develop and provide ongoing support to a community of queer artists.
