Join us on Wednesday May 22nd at 6 PM for a conversation between Baxter St 2023 Artist in Residence Martha Naranjo Sandoval and curator Kelly Long on the occassion of Naranjo Sandoval’s solo exhibition Flowering Wound at Baxter St.

ABOUT MARTHA NARANJO SANDOVAL

Martha Naranjo Sandoval (b. 1989 Mexico City, Mexico) is a Brooklyn-based visual artist, publisher, photobook seller, and cataloguer. Her work has been exhibited throughout the United States and internationally at the International Center of Photography, Queens, NY; Flux Factory, Long Island City, NY; and The Lumber Room, Portland, OR. Her work is also included in the collections of Proyecto Bachué in Bogotá, Columbia; International Center of Photography Library, New York, NY; Museum of Modern Art Library, New York, NY; Pratt University, New York, NY; Mediateca del Centro de Diseño, Cine y Televisión in Mexico City, Mexico among others. She received her MFA in Advanced Studies in Photography at the International Center of Photography and Bard College, and her BFA in Film and Television from the Centro de Diseño, Cine y Televisión. ABOUT KELLY LONG

Kelly Long is an art worker and writer currently serving as Senior Curatorial Assistant at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, where she has managed the museum’s Photography Acquisitions Committee since 2017, and developed exhibitions such as Rachel Harrison Life Hack (2019) and Fragments of a Faith Forgotten: The Art of Harry Smith (2023). Most recently, she organized Trust Me (2023), a group exhibition exploring the role that vulnerability plays in forging connection, and the overlapping lives and loves of photography’s creators, viewers, and caretakers. In her curatorial practice, Kelly specializes in contemporary art, and in photography from mid-century to the present, with a focus on artists working in ways that are multidisciplinary, multivocal, and collaborative. Previously, Kelly has held curatorial and teaching positions at the George Eastman Museum and at the University of Rochester, and in 2020 collaborated on the running of Aid for Art Now (AFAN), a mutual aid project by and for art workers. She holds an MA in Visual and Cultural Studies from the University of Rochester, and a BA in Art History from Vassar College. Her writing has appeared in the catalogues for Chiharu Shiota: The Hand Lines and Gail Thacker: Fugitive Moments, and in publications such as InVisible Culture and Mossflower.
