ICP-Bard MFA 2018 Thesis Exhibition

To Know a Stranger is an exhibition of new works by the MFA 2018 graduates from the International Center of Photography-Bard College MFA program in Advanced Photographic Studies.

About the Artists

Timothy Briner (Chesterton, IN) is an American artist living in Brooklyn, NY. Briner is best known for his 2007 project, Boonville, in which he spent a year documenting six different towns across the United States, all of which were named Boonville. During the last three years, Briner has moved into the studio and his approach to making work has become centered around his immediate surroundings and is rooted in his family history and his struggles with depression. Briner has had solo shows at Daniel Cooney Fine Art in New York, The Brauer Museum of Art in Indiana and Keene State College in New Hampshire. Briner is the recipient of the Peter S. Reed Foundation grant. He received his MFA from ICP-Bard in New York in 2018.

Naima Green is a Brooklyn-based artist and educator. She holds an MFA in Photography from ICP–Bard, an MA from Teachers College, Columbia University, and a BA from Barnard College, Columbia University. Green recently presented her MFA thesis exhibition All the black language (May 2018), and her work has been featured in exhibitions at the International Center of Photography (2018), Houston Center for Photography (2017), Bronx Museum (2017), BRIC (2015 and 2016), Arsenal Gallery (2015) and Macy Gallery (2013 and 2014). Green has been an artist-in-residence at the Bronx Museum (2016), Vermont Studio Center (2015), and recipient of the Myers Art Prize at Columbia University (2013). Her work has been published in Arts.Black, The Atlantic, Cultured, The Fader, The NationNew York MagazineThe New York TimesSpot Magazine, and SPOOK, amongst others.

Tino (Brooklyn, New York) is an imagemaker specializing in video and photography. Tino has presented a solo show of mixed media installations titled Gentrification: Brooklyn, NY (2016) at Hampshire College. The exhibition included a series of 11 platinum/palladium print photographs, four 16mm film loops, and two video loops. His current project includes a documentary film and photography of daily Cuban life. Through photography and video, Tino aims to lift his own personal/familial history up into the American narrative. Tino graduated from Hampshire College with a bachelor of arts degree, with a focus in film and photography and from ICP-Bard with an MFA in Advanced Photographic Studies. 

Kaz Senju is a visual artist, who was born in Japan, resides in Brooklyn, NY. Senju practices the medium of photography, video, and installation to address his interest in communities that are otherwise under-represented. His recent projects include “3 Years Past” (2014), a documentary film of interviews with high school students from Fukushima, Japan discussing their lives after the nuclear power plant accident in 2011. His most recent photo series “Shinjuku Story” (2017) captures the LGBTQ community in Tokyo though a mixture of portraiture, interviews, video, and street photography.

Daniel Valentin (New Brunswick, New Jersey) is a visual artist working primarily in photography. He received an MFA in Advanced Photographic Studies from the International Center of Photography-Bard program. Solo exhibitions include Everything is Something Else (2018)at the ICP MFA studios in Long Island City, New York and Fragments of the Ordinary (2012) at the Saskia Fernando Gallery in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He has been in group shows at the Power Arts Gallery at William Paterson University (2013), Valley Arts in Orange, New Jersey (2014) and in several New York City shows (2014-2018).

Naiwen Zhang was born in Wuhan, China in 1992. She has recently graduated from ICP-Bard MFA program. She works with photography and video.

About the Curator

Nicole Bull (b. Upland, PA) is a Brooklyn based artist working mainly in photography and video. She holds an MFA from ICP-Bard and a BA in anthropology and studio art from the University of Vermont. Her solo exhibitions include Before You Go at the ICP Bard MFA studios in Queens, NY (2018) and here for you at the Frances Colburn Gallery in Burlington, VT (2015). Recent group exhibitions include Close to Reality at the International Center for Photography in New York, NY (2018), SHIM Invitational 5 at Art Helix in Brooklyn, NY (2017), the annual postcard exhibition at A.I.R. Gallery in Brooklyn, NY (2017), Eyes// Vermont at New City Galerie in Burlington, VT (2016) and 1236# at Frances Coburn Gallery in Burlington, VT (2015).
