Bollen Gilles Rie
2017 Annual Juried Competition
Honorable Mention

After visiting interior design fairs, I became interested in the practice of creating items in the simplest sense possible. The items that are created are devoid of colors and references that have no specific function but have a certain familiarity to me and perhaps to some viewers.

When I build the shapes I am initially confronted by a curiosity of its visual properties and its behavior as a non-object. Then I photograph these items once to record its existence and discard the object away. As a result, the images produced are my sketches or rough drafts for more ideas and more discoveries.

Born in the Philippines in 1981, Bollen Gilles Rie was determined to learn English through the movie Clueless and Disney Read Along cassette tapes. It paid off. Somehow. That was in the Philippines. At 20, he migrated to the US and pursued photography. He currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York where he is constantly exploring new ideas for clothes, music, and photography. He received his undergraduate degree in Photography from School of Visual Arts in 2008. His works have been exhibited in Photoville 2012 for the 2084 show, Prague Bienniale 4 in Prague in 2009, School of Visual Arts Mentor Show in New York and contributed his photographs for benefit exhibitions.
