A Peek Behind the Curtain:
How Photo Galleries Work and Tips How to Break In
Instructor: Alice Sachs Zimet

March 12 & 13, 2016
Saturday & Sunday, 10 – 5 pm
(Weekend Workshop)
Cost $300 ($270 BAXTER ST at CCNY members)
The maximum number of students in this class is 12.

This class goes behind-the-scenes to better understand how commercial photography galleries function within the fine art marketplace … and offers tips on how to break in. We’ll meet with galleries (TBD) (Lower East Side, Chelsea, or Upper East Side) where we’ll look at images firsthand and up close. More importantly, we will have a frank discussion with owners and sales associates about how galleries find new talent, whether they do portfolio reviews, how prices are determined and shared, tips on what not to do when approaching a dealer and other reality checks about finding and dealing with a gallery.

We’ll also discuss non-profit resources, especially how non-profit benefit auctions can be a ‘portal’ to getting your work out into the marketplace. Other topics include: pricing issues, editioning and labels, and tips to showing work at a portfolio review. Because how photographers communicate with collectors and galleries is so critical, we’ll discuss your own communication tools, both written and verbal. You’ll be asked to present your business card for class review and to present your 5-minute ‘elevator speech’ while showing your work, followed by class critique.
