Join us December 3rd to hear Jen Davis and Tommy Kha discuss the role of self-portraiture in their work, as well as Kha’s first monograph, A Real Imitation, to be released this December by Aint-Bad Magazine. Through autobiography, A Real Imitation employs strategies related to self-portraiture—such as performance, the body, masquerade, family album, and test shots, as a way to locate Kha’s representation and role within his own photographs.
Jen Davis is a New York based photographer. For the past eleven years she has been working on a series of self-portraits dealing with issues regarding beauty, identity, and body image. She has also been exploring men as a subject, and is interested in investigating the idea of the relationship, both physical and psychological, with her camera. Her first monograph titled Eleven Years, published by Kehrer Verlag (Germany) was released in the Spring of 2014 accompioned by her first solo show in New York City at ClampArt. She received an MFA from Yale University in 2008, and BFA from Columbia College Chicago in 2002. Davis’ work has been exhibited both nationally and internationally. She is the recipiant of The New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship. Her photographs are in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, The Sir Elton John Photography Collection, and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Tommy Kha is a photographer currently living and working in New York City and Memphis, TN. He is a recipient of the Jessie and Dolph Smith Emeritus Award, a former artist-in-residence at the Center for Photography at Woodstock and at Light Work in Syracuse, New York. Some publications of his work include Slate, the Huffington Post, Blouin ArtInfo, BUTT Magazine, Le Roy (DDMMYY), Miranda July’s “We Think Alone,” Wallpaper*, and Aint-Bad Magazine, and he has exhibited in Toronto, New York, Chicago, the United Kingdom, Shanghai, and Germany. Aint-Bad Editions will publish a selection of Kha’s body of work, A Real Imitation. While pursuing his photography and video work, Kha occasionally makes appearances in films. Kha is a graduate of the Yale Photography MFA program. His website is tommykha.com.
