Juried Competition Honorable Mention Ian Lewandowski is a photographer from Northwest Indiana, presently living and working in Brooklyn. “From 2015-17, I mostly made pictures of men. Masculine images pervade my life. Served with the words and actions of the US President and the former Indiana-governor-turned-VP, the need for the Me Too movement, and the ongoing erasure of, and violent acts toward, feminine and non-binary presences, masculine energies continue to be positioned as vital. To be masculine feels dire and high stakes. Men-only spaces are protected and upheld first. When I make my work I tend to start with questions. What is at stake? Is there a method? These energies do not escape queer circles. The varied, complicated realities of queer people are easily compressed into monikers like “community”, a wording that has the capacity to further highlight and reify their difference, dismiss the nuance of their contribution. Binary thinking uncomplicates what has the potential to be reimagined." 📷: ‘The Healer,’ 2015. @ilewando #baxterstccny #photography

Juried Competition Honorable Mention Amiko Li: “This is a series of photographs that I made between China and U.S. Through strategies of correspondence, reenactment, exchange and mistranslation, I am exploring an aleatoric approach to Chinese vernacular culture, and the limitation to the gender representation in a global lens. In a world where culture and identity is neatly condensed and branded as a keyword for easy digestion, I want to look at things that are not so concisely fitting into the stereotypical image." 📷: ‘Paul,’ 2015. @amikoli #baxterstccny #photography

Juried Competition Honorable Mention Angal Field is a 24 year-old non-binary trans photographer, writer, and filmmaker. They graduated Barnard College of Columbia University in 2016 with a B.A. in English. Originally from Portland, Oregon, they currently reside in New York City, as a working artist. “”Beaches, Bedrooms” depicts young queer subjects indoors and along various coastlines. The project emerged out of my own gender bloom and has expanded my understanding of the many possible ways to live in a body. Recalling the subject matter of Rineke Dijkstra, in its homage to the sea and dedication to youth in transition; the fashion inspired composition of Collier Schorr’s Neighbors; and the idiosyncratic perspectives of Northern Renaissance paintings, this photographic body adheres to these portrait traditions and marks a shifting field of optics." 📷: ‘Tom Cat,’ 2017. @angalisfield #baxterstccny #photography

Juried Competition Winner Dannielle Bowman was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. She received a BFA from The Cooper Union in 2011 and an MFA from The Yale School of Art in 2018. "Dannielle Bowman’s work is engaged with ideas around time, history, landscape and visibility. She is particularly interested in how various landscapes have been used throughout history by certain people to gain power over others. In her work, she is asking questions about privilege and power gained through access to land and information. Her photos work to challenge the privileged histories passed down through selective telling of certain stories based on what information, people and places have been deemed important and what information, people and places have not." 📷: ‘Mine,’ 2018. #danniellebowman #baxterstccny #photography
