I went on a hike with two friends and a dog this summer. Watching the dog run around off her leash, in a state of complete and overwhelming joy, we wondered out loud “what is the human equivalent of being a dog off a leash?” The answer, we decided, was the feeling we get in the moment of clocking out of our job. Here’s to the weekend, to a freedom so close that we can just about see our own joy hidden under that tarp in the garden. . This is @sammargevicius posting images of my work and working process.

Last year I was really interested in the number 4. A combination of causes, effects, and otherwise curious events came together in a way that made me feel as though the number 4 held a special power. It’s fun to think this way… so long as you, I dunno… don’t get too overwhelmed? In a lot of East Asian countries they don’t have 4th floors in buildings because the word “4” sounds like the word “death.” In my studio, which is sort of like my garden and which I share with the amazingly talented @miniature_garden, I have had these photographs taped up on the wall next to each other. Now I’m beginning to enjoy the number 3 and patiently await it’s various manifestations. This is @sammargevicius posting images of my work and working process. #studioviews #wip #photography #magic

For the last couple months I’ve been working as a darkroom mural printer at a photo lab in Brooklyn. This metal vacuum board is my canvas; It’s the surface that film gets projected onto from a horizontal 8x10” enlarger. I use magnets to hold up test strips and fully custom sized papers. I’m an art laborer here, getting paid to quietly perform a craft that most often has little to do with the artist’s concept; still I am endlessly fascinated by the aesthetic traces of the many small utilitarian decisions I make. Here’s an example of what I mean 🤷🏼♂️🤓, these strips of paper cover various sections of the projected image as a way to conserve paper while testing exposure, contrast, dodging, and burning. I made this piece on my own time however, with a few extra slices of paper off the end of a 50” roll. Turning on lights to photograph the composition rendered the paper useless for photographic enlargement thereafter. Kind of the way intimate moments are ruined when someone puts a camera in front their face to “capture” the moment. Oh jeeze, you’re making it through all this technical jargon?!! When will pictures be enough without all the explanation 🙄😣🤔 I’m @sammargevicius sharing thoughts and images about the dark and esoteric art of #analog #photography for @baxterstccny #cameraclubofnewyork 🌻

What camera and film to use? The answer to these questions are certain to affect the outcome of a day’s work in photography. Similarly, what shoes and jacket to wear are certain to affect the pleasure of a day’s play outdoors. Additionally, 3 bananas - wrapped in nature’s own impeccably designed protective casing - are more than enough. I love packing, at best it gives me that wonderful balance of preparedness and enough room for the unknown or intuitive response. . . Hi this is @sammargevicius , I’m going to be sharing some images of my work and working process over the next week. I thought I’d start out with this picture of the tarp-covered section of a garden. This summer I was having a hard time moving on from the completion of a previous project so as a healthy practice I would force myself to go out and make pictures. I began to notice plastic tarps everywhere I looked, people seem to drape them over everything from garbage to precious cars and plants. I decided that photographing these utilitarian draperies was a way for me to be gentle with myself, and I came to think of the pictures as a practice in patience. One day my ideas would burst forth from beneath these curious surfaces, but for now they had a special place to live and grow. I guess a studio practice can be a lot like gardening. #bluetarp #gardening #studiopractice #wip #creativeblock #4x5 #colorfilm #artphotography #ccny

#sidewalksignalcode recreate nautical signal code flags using images I made while wandering the streets of New York City. They provide a system of communication understood from a distance, and used when lost at sea or on the sidewalk. Like the flags’ original function, my flags correspond to the alphabet and relay simple, urgent messages. “J” also means “I am on fire and have dangerous cargo on board, keep well clear of me.” “X” is the title of my show #stopcarryingoutyourintentionsandwatchformysignals You can pick up a key @baxterstccny when you go see my show! @katarinajerinic #soloshow #sidewalk #urbanlandscape #newyorkcity #baxterstccny #chinatownnyc
